Reverberation Chambers
Reverberation Chambers
A reverberation chamber is a specially designed room with highly reflective surfaces that create a highly diffused sound or electromagnetic field, used for acoustic/EMC testing by reflecting energy repeatedly to achieve uniform distribution, unlike anechoic chambers that absorb it. They feature hard, non-parallel walls and often use 'stirrers' (moving reflectors) to vary the field, allowing measurement of material absorption, source power, and device immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI).
Key Characteristics & Functions
- Sound/EM Energy Trapping: Surfaces are designed to reflect almost all incident sound or electromagnetic energy, creating a persistent, uniform field.
- Diffuse Field: Aims for a sound field where energy flows equally in all directions, or a complex, randomized EM field.
- Stirrers/Tuners: Metallic reflectors moved within the chamber change the field patterns, ensuring comprehensive testing and overcoming standing waves.
The SWAT R-Cabin
The R-Cabin is a versatile and standardised acoustic chamber designed for accurate sound power measurements in the electroacoustic and automotive sectors. It can also be integrated with a standard reverberation room to perform advanced sound insulation testing using the sound intensity method.
Applications
- Sound Power Testing: Ideal for measuring the acoustic power of electroacoustic devices.
- Acoustic Material R&D: When paired with a standard reverberation room, it can measure the sound reduction index of building and product components, guiding material development.

Top FAQs
An acoustic anechoic chamber is a room designed to completely absorb sound reflections and block external noise, creating a free-field acoustic environment.
The foam/fiberglass wedges absorb incident sound waves and prevent reflections, simulating an open-space environment indoors.
The following tests are conducted in acoustic anechoic chambers:
- Sound power measurements
- Frequency response
- Noise source localization
- Microphone calibration
- Loudspeaker/audio equipment testing
A chamber with absorbent walls and ceiling but a solid reflective floor (for testing heavy equipment or automotive components).
